THE PROJECTS

Projects range from a pair of bedroom curtains through general advice on room layouts to the full concept-to-completion design service. However large or small, Jane Blanchard regards attention to detail as of paramount importance, ensuring that the project is completed on time and entirely to the client's satisfaction.

Clients have included:

Fearnach Bay House

This house was successfully built in the vernacular style for use as a renting holiday home (www.argyllholidaycottage.co.uk). The clients wanted a comfortable woolly plaid look without being clichéd. The colours of the loch in front and the bracken covered hills behind were the inspiration for the colours used.

The Boathouse Restaurant, Kingairloch

This little restaurant was converted from a former boathouse, complete with balcony area looking down the loch. There are hints at the shore and the sea throughout; in the shell wall lights, the pebble fronted bar with its nautical lights, the “globe” pendant lights, Dickie’s driftwood sculptures and mirrors made from beach treasures. The furniture is from Hyacinth Designs and covered in a wool plaid in soft blues and greens. The curtains are hung behind a pelmet made from oars strapped together with nautical rope. Hawthorn Steadings, Bed and Breakfast
This 5 bedroom Bed and Breakfast was converted from a disused steadings. Each bedroom was based on a plaid or estate tweed, which inspired a plant or bird native to the estate. These were then designed into cushions and blinds made on a felted wool base by Sarah Campbell of Mogwaii Designs (www.mogwaiidesign.com).

Carness West
This holiday house was completed in 2007 - a successful partnership between Jane Blanchard Design and The Building Restoration Company. It was built "upside down" with the bedrooms and bathrooms downstairs, allowing the first floor to be open plan. The large windows take advantage of the spectacular mountain views on all sides. (The house can be booked through www.scottish-country-cottages.co.uk).

Home Farm
The owners wanted to retain the character of the existing farmhouse, but it was too small for their needs – and none of the first floor rooms looked out at the wonderful views of the surrounding mountains. We moved the staircase, re-arranged the first floor and built an extension to the rear. The whole house was then redecorated and re-furnished. The ceiling in the Moroccan loo was inspired by our recent holiday in Marrakech and was made to Jane Blanchard’s design by Peter Davies. The kitchen was created using (and painting) the old pine units in a completely new open plan configuration.

Private farmhouse, Argyll
(Featured in "At Home" magazine and "Home Plus" magazine)
This was a challenge in that the owner wanted to create a light-filled contemporary living space without compromising the character of his traditional farmhouse. The final result was achieved by opening out the ground floor area and building in a glass and steel framed stairwell, accessing light from the landing.

Kingairloch Estate, by Ardgour
This is an on-going series of projects, which has so far included the total refurbishment of various estate cottages and of Kingairloch House itself. The latter included "ripping out" the first floor and re-arranging it to house 5 bedrooms and bathrooms. This project was also featured in “At Home” and “Home Plus” magazines.

No. 4 Cameron Square, Fort William
Conversion of a town house to an up-market restaurant with a rich and comfortable atmosphere. Jane Blanchard designed and supplied everything for the interior and the building and finishing work was carried out by The Building Restoration Company.

Glengarry Castle Hotel, Invergarry
has become an old friend over the past fourteen years, as each season another few bedrooms, or one of the reception areas has been completely redecorated and furnished. Only now are some of the first bedrooms from 1989 being "freshened up", as the maxim from the outset has been to create a traditional yet timeless feel that will withstand the constant wear you would expect in a successful hotel.

Fyne Spirit
Jane Blanchard Design was commissioned to “rescue” the fitting out of this boat, which had been partially converted from a working boat to a 12 cabin cruiser. One of the existing crew members was exceptionally good at rope work, and his skills were put to good use in decorating the steel pillars. A challenging project in terms of materials and optimum use of small spaces.
